Is Streaming Piracy Illegal in the United States?

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

Stream for free on a Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro

Good question, "Is Streaming Piracy illegal in the United States of America?" You see just about everyone doing this, and you see them doing it in different ways also.

You have the people who stream on websites using their computers or phones.

You have the people who have IPTV Services on cheap streaming boxes. And/or on their phones. I don't see too many on computers or premium streaming boxes.

You have people who have APKs on cheap or premium streaming boxes. Then a ton of people have these same APKs or different ones on their phone.

Then there is the Kodi only lovers with complete builds that cover it all. Having a complete build is a game changer in 2025.

With all these many different ways to stream piracy is it so illegal? Like when a fan spotted LeBron James streaming the NBA on a Streameast website?

Clearly a billionaire like LeBron is above the law. Him using the website speaks volumes for other streamers but also tells someone like me, "This guy is above the law, nothing is happening to him."

But what about to the average Joe? A person who is not rich nor famous. A person who is looking to just lower their monthly cost?

It's clear these cable companies and streaming companies have gotten away from the customers experience. And it's more like planned obsolete making there service shitter while charging a ton more.

What happened? And how are we all here today?

What People Mean When They Say “Streaming Piracy”

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

Streaming links only, just click and play

It seems like since the death of great leaders like (Steve Jobs) who valued customers experiences over shareholders profits is how this table has turned. Then there fact you can tell everything is made cheaper. There is no quality control anymore.

Boy, how sad has the world become? And here we all are, again back to piracy.

Wasn't streaming suppose to fix this problem? Well, it did for awhile. That was until Netflix loss 1 Million users in a single quarter. Wow, was that even real? Can we see the proof of this?

I ask because Netflix changed their model overnight, and started to back paddle on their own messages. Caring is sharing, your Netflix password to now, you are stealing when you share your password. Make up your mind Netflix, which one is it?

The Netflix model has exposed in their faces and we are paying for it with rising prices and declining quality of their service. Like, $7.99 to stream with ads. The whole point was to get away from ads and commercials. Yet, Netflix has added this into their price tier.

Then for, “4K videos" they are charging $24.99 a month. Wow, that is a lot for fake 4K compressed videos. Yes, their 4K videos are not real 4K at all. You can read all about this in the blog, “Why cheap streaming devices aren’t worth it in 2024-2025”.

This is why people have found there way back to piracy. The price is too high to stream and the service sucks. Either way, we are all just about using what I like to call, "Streaming Piracy" to stream Netflix for free. See, piracy vs. streaming piracy is very different.

Piracy to me is downloading, copying, or sharing files.

Streaming Piracy is just using search engines to stream content. You are not looking to download. You are just watching and then moving on with your life.

Is Streaming Piracy Actually Illegal? (The Legal Grey Zone Explained)

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

LeBron James streaming on Streameast

See, when you, the average joe is streaming, technically, no crime is being broken nor taken place from my understanding. There is nothing against just streaming. How long is this going to last, I'm not too sure.

It’s September 2025 and No, streaming piracy for the average person is not illegal in the United States of America.

There is nothing in our laws about streaming piracy. And this is why more people should do this but in a safer way. We will get to the safer way a little later down in the blog. But this is still a grey area and parts are still illegal.

What do you mean parts are illegal?

  • Downloading (copyright content) = illegal

  • Distributing/selling (copyright content) = illegal

  • Streaming = not directly criminalized (for the end user)

See when I said technically, I’m looking at what is written and how it is written. Downloading copyrighted content is illegal, distributing (selling it) copyrighted content is illegal, but streaming copyrighted content not directly criminalized (yet).

The Protecting Lawful Streaming Act, targets large-scale operators, not the average person looking to stream a movie for the night.

When you see in these lawsuits or even cases where people go to jail, it’s the sellers who is distributing the copyrighted content. These people most likely have servers they host the copyrighted content on. This is against the law, you are re-selling something you did not create yourself. This is why companies and people gets things copyrighted, trademark registered, or even patents to protect their creation.

Our Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 does not fall under this law of copyright. You are using search engines to stream the content, no copyright content is hosted onto the device. And on the search engines side, for the creators ,they have no servers where the content is pulling from.

This is why the website owners are caught, there is no jail time. They most likely do not have the server either. They most likely are buying the links, and then loading it onto the website and sending it out to you all with the ad network to earn money. Hints all the popups.

See, no one holds the copyrighted content so no law is being broken.

Again, say someone like LeBron James is buying from a distributor, nothing would happened to him.

Where you, the average joe, are now being hit with a fine. Which gets under my skin, every person online, whether is a blogger or YouTube knows this, and yet they tell you to buy the illegal way. Knowing if the seller is caught, you get in problem too.

What Is 100% Illegal (and What isn’t Illegal when Streaming and Downloading)

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

IPTV Services are illegal, STAY AWAY!

That fine I was talking about happens when you, the buyer, stream from an IPTV Service. Yes, IPTV Services are 100% illegal in the United States. These sellers have to host the live TV network channels on their own servers. And when they’re caught, your information is sitting right there with them. That’s why users are now getting fines, while sellers are facing jail time.

We’re not talking a slap on the wrist either. In some cases, like Target1080p aka Gear of War IPTV, sellers had to pay $5 million in fines and do 5 years in prison.

Insane, right? That’s the world we live in.

Why so harsh?

Because live TV networks fall under copyrighted law. You can’t just take channels you’re paying for and resell them to everyone else.

👉 Here’s the breakdown:

  • Illegal: Paying for IPTV Services that sell live TV channels (high risk for both seller and buyer).

  • Illegal: Distributing or reselling copyrighted content.

  • Grey Area: Streaming movies, TV shows, or sports online without downloading them.

  • Legal: Free, open-source streaming with the right tools (yes, this exists and I’ll cover it soon).

So when bloggers or YouTubers tell you to “just grab an IPTV service,” they’re setting you up for trouble. If that seller gets caught, you get dragged into it too.

Here’s the funny part: there are ways to watch live TV that aren’t illegal, and they’re free. That’s why paying for an IPTV Service is a lose-lose. You risk your money, your privacy, and possibly fines, while sellers are the ones doing real time.

And just to be clear: this has nothing to do with what we do. Streaming piracy itself, the act of watching, is not illegal in the U.S. as of now.

How to Stream Safely in 2025 and Beyond

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro

When you stream, what do you use? A computer, phone, or one of those cheap boxes? Bad move.

Think about it, your computer and phone hold everything personal: passwords, bank logins, work files. All it takes is one shady website with malware, and boom, your info’s gone. My wife got hacked once on hotel WiFi, and it was six hours of fighting to get her accounts back. Total nightmare.

That’s why you need a buffer device. A streaming box that does nothing but stream. No personal data. No logins. Just pure entertainment.

And no, I’m not talking about those cheap streaming boxes that buffer nonstop. I’m talking about a premium device you fully control.

Like the Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro.

We’ve stripped out Google Play Services, Play Store, and all the bloat. No logins. No tracking. Just streaming. We replaced Google’s store with our own Android App Store, so you can still download apps, install updates, and even run 3D movies, without being tied into Google’s system.

And the best part? You control the home screen. No ads. Just the apps you want, the way you want them. We even added our custom launcher with a Dragon Ball Z screensaver you won’t find anywhere else. That’s how you know it’s ours.

Legal – Free Open-Source Streaming with the Right Device

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

Our Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro home screen

Here’s what most people don’t realize: Android is open-source.

That means anyone can make an app, sign it, and share it. Totally legal. The only reason you don’t hear this is because companies like Google and Apple don’t want you to know. Apple locks you into their ecosystem and takes a 30% cut from every app. Google, meanwhile, is now pushing “certified devices” and trying to lock down sideloading.

That’s why our Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro is different. By disabling Google’s grip, we’ve made it an uncertified Android device. Which means you can sideload and install whatever you want without interference. Safe. Legal. Yours.

And here’s the kicker: once you’ve got our Elite System on it, you don’t need updates. The device itself stays running on Android 9 (version 8.2.1) for full control. The apps (APKs) themselves let you know when they need updated. That means your box stays stable for the next 3–5 years with no risk of forced updates breaking things.

Compare that to Fire Sticks, Onn Boxes, Chromecast, or Apple TV, they’re locked down, low-powered, and built on outdated 32-bit systems. Every update they push just takes more control away from you the so-called owner of the device.

That’s why I keep saying: the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 may be the last streaming device you’ll ever truly control. Once these are gone, they’re gone.

Why Cheap Devices Put You at Risk

Is-Streaming-Piracy-Illegal

Fire Stick home screen is full of ads, you control nothing.

Did you know cheap streaming devices are basically spying machines? The companies that sell them watch every move you make.

Back in 2018, I had a Fire Stick. One day it worked fine, the next morning it demanded a VPN just to stream. Wild. That “update” basically tattled to my internet provider and locked me out.

It’s only gotten worse. The latest Fire Stick update forced users to uninstall apps. Walmart’s Onn Box pushed Android 14 and bricked people’s devices, and no, Walmart didn’t hand out free replacements even though it was their fault. Roku only lets you sideload one app, and if they catch you streaming something they don’t like, they lock you out of your own device. Madness.

Apple’s just as bad. Every tvOS update makes Kodi harder to run. The latest one forces you to reinstall your entire system every year. While blocking free live TV at the same time.

WTF is going on? You paid for the device. Why are they telling you what you can and can’t do?

That’s why I stick with the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 (Android 9, version 8.2.1). That version number is key, it means full control. No forced updates, no spying, no losing your apps overnight.

NVIDIA plays both sides. On one hand, they release updates that please Google. On the other, they quietly leave downgrade packages on their site so people like us can roll back and keep our freedom. No other company does this.

So you’ve got a choice:

  • Take the “latest” Android 11 update, run 20% slower, and let them control everything.

  • Or stay on Android 9 and own a device that’s truly yours.

Meanwhile, everyday costs; food, utilities, life itself, keep going up. So why let them drain more money from us? That’s where we come in. Our Elite System on a Jailbroken Nvidia Shield Pro fixes all of that.

Plug it in, and it just works. No sign-ins. No buffering (use ethernet for the strongest connection). All your sports in one place. All your apps, free or paid, in one place.
